Featuring over 1,000 acres of wetland and upland conservation areas including three miles of beach and carefully buffered natural creeks, WindMark Beach is a community that was conceived in harmony with its surroundings. In addition to the preservation of 140 acres of beach and dune systems, JOE will create over 20 miles of public trails that make the beach accessible to everyone. Boasting a residential density of one home per acre, Windmark Beach retains the unspoiled beauty that only nature can afford.
While master planners work to ensure that each JOE development exceeds environmental standards, JOE also works to develop environmental education programs. WindMark Beach, for example, offers a habitat and wildlife education program for construction contractors. The program works to eliminate impacts to habitats and wildlife species at WindMark Beach by establishing construction limits and buffers that protect sensitive wetland and upland ecosystems. The WindMark Beach Naturalist, a dedicated wildlife biologist on JOE’s staff, monitors several state- and federally-listed plants at WindMark Beach and the surrounding area and surveys take place during the height of each plant’s flowering time periods to aid the naturalist in positive identification of each plant species. Species monitored at WindMark Beach include Chapman’s Rhododendron, Spreading Pogonia, Butterworts, Pineland False Sunflower, Chapman’s Crownbeard, Parrot Pitcher Plants, Giant Water Dropwort, Pine Lily and Godfrey’s GoldenAster. The WindMark Beach Naturalist also monitors several state- and federally-listed animals found in the area such as Sea Turtles, Snowy Plovers, Black Bear and Gopher Tortoises.
